Active and Passive Voice
ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE
- DEFINITION
a. Active Voice
In active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of
the sentence and the thing receiving the action is the object. Most sentences
are active.
b. Passive Voice
In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the
subject of the sentence and the thing doing the action is optionally included
near the end of the sentence.
Why should you use the passive voice ?

who or what did the action

you don't know who did
the action
·
the object is the most
important or the most interesting part of the sentence
- FORMULA
a. Active Voice
[Thing doing action] + [verb] + [thing receiving
action]
S + V + O
b. Passive Voice
[Thing receiving action] + [be] + [past
participle of verb] + [by] + [thing doing action]
S + BE + past participle of verb + BY + O
- EXAMPLE
a. A.V :Andine
waters this plant every two days
P. V : This plant is watered by her every two
days
b. A.V : She
watered this plant this morning
P. V : This plant was watered by her this
morning
c. A.V : She
has watered this plant for 10 minutes
P. V : This plant has been watered by her for 10
minutes
